FoxPro is a text-based procedurally-orientedprogramming language and DBMS, originally published by Fox Softwareand later by Microsoft, for MS-DOS, MS Windows, Apple Macintosh,and UNIX. Visual FoxPro is a data-centric object-oriented andprocedural programming language produced by Microsoft. It isderived from FoxPro (originally known as FoxBASE) which wasdeveloped by Fox Software beginning in 1984. Fox Technologiesmerged with Microsoft in 1992, after which the software acquiredfurther features and the prefix “Visual”. The last version ofFoxPro (2.6) worked under Mac OS, DOS, Windows, and Unix: VisualFoxPro 3.0, the first “Visual” version, reduced platform support toonly Mac and Windows, and later versions were Windows-only. Thecurrent version of Visual FoxPro is COM-based and Microsoft hasstated that they do not intend to create a Microsoft .NETversion.
Although FoxPro is a Database Management System (DBMS) and itdoes support relationships between tables, it is not considered aRelational Database Management System (RDBMS), lackingtransactional processing.
